How To Increase Traffic To Your Website - Maynas Eric

Marketing is heading in the direction of the Internet and will be around for years to come. Use these tips to increase your income.

The word ?guaranteed? has a special allure for consumers when used in website marketing. A guarantee will let people know that they can trust in your company and your products. By products being guaranteed, customers are more at ease when spending their hard-earned money.

Don?t forget the little details on your web pages. For instance, each page of your site needs to contain the business name and some general info about what you?re offering. Customers may have several tabs or pages open, and they need to see easily which site they?re on at any given time.

TIP! Online advertising is a great way to get attention and draw people to your site. This type of advertising will help more people become aware of your site and help your business grow.

Adding a limited-time offer to your product can be a powerful motivator for some consumers. You can offer free shipping for those who order within the next 10 minutes or free gift wrapping; any kind of added incentive will do. Set a clear deadline so that people will feel compelled to order quickly.

Your competition is an important factor. Find out what is working for them and what isn?t, and keep track of their strategies. Sometimes your competitors can be your very best teachers. Learn from their mistakes and make your site more complete and original.

Keep AJAX and Flash use to a minimum. Although it may look nice and add interactivity to your site, it doesn?t help search engines find your site at all. Use it sparingly and include keywords and relevant links on the same page.

TIP! Promote your website as a community or gathering of likeminded suctomer or business people. Your website will enjoy greater traffic as people return to your website to communicate with other customers.

Consider a gift with purchase for new or repeated customers to show they are appreciated. Customers want to feel as if they?re getting the better end of the deal. Of course, you still need to profit. So you need to find a happy medium. Something like an information product or an eBook works great for a freebie. You can give this out indefinitely without it having a negative effect on your profit margin.

Consider the following website marketing tip. Have a clear and stated goal on the front page of your site. The landing page is dedicated to selling your product. When a viewer sees your landing page they should have a clear understanding of what you have to offer. If the first page a visitor sees is overly complicated and hard to navigate, they will click away in the blink of an eye.

Use polls on your websites to see what your users think of your content. Acknowledging and implementing your users? ideas helps to build a relationship with your audience.

TIP! Evaluate your website on a regular basis by asking for constructive feedback. It is essential that you have an idea of how others perceive your site.

The use of tools that can make your text stand out are very important when you are setting up the content of your site. You can increase a word?s strength by bolding it or italicizing it. This can assist you in clarifying your message and help show your customers what your company is about.

Create a FAQ section on your site. This help your traffic see that you are important to them and are there to address their concerns as quickly as possible. The clearer the benefit is to your client, the better chance they will purchase goods or services from you.

Always pay attention to your competitors to be successful in an internet business. Compare the web pages of your competitors to garner ideas on things that may work for you too. Emphasize services that your competitors? websites are lacking to help your website stand out and provide visitors with information they can?t get elsewhere.

TIP! Creating a solid internet marketing plan will enable you to identify your most successful products. A good strategy is to use your best sellers to drive sales of complimentary and add-on products.

Consider using words like ?easy? and ?simple? as a part of your Affiliate marketing strategy. People generally dislike overly complicated things, so adding tags like ?easy to order? and ?easy to use? can entice them to use your product. Keep things easy for your customers to retain their business.

Offering your visitors any type of course which is free is a great way to lure them to your site. This is a great strategy, especially when it involves a course because you can package it with another related product. Create your advertising campaign to show off your new and necessary online course.

Include something that is a niche or unique to your site. If you can offer a unique, exclusive product, it can make a dramatic difference in the amount of traffic you receive. The visitors then usually end up checking out other parts of your sites which eventually sends it up the search engine rankings.

TIP! Consider your first venture into the world of Internet marketing to be a potentially lucrative hobby, but don?t count on it as a replacement for your job until you get your bearings and know how things are going. If you enjoy what you are doing, you will have extra motivation to succeed each day.

Consider offering an e-freebie that represents your business or service well, and put it out there where it can reach the masses. For example if you are giving away an e-book, contact free e-book sites. Take advantage of the many different free options you can find online.

While a flashy site looks great, try to make sure it is not too distracting. Keep in mind that users generally take five seconds to decide if they are going to stay on a site or not. Use this knowledge to create a site that will tempt them to stay. If they have found nothing to hold their interest in that time, then they will leave your site to browse elsewhere.

As you have learned, increasing your knowledge on Web marketing can really take you far. Now that you understand a lot about internet marketing, hopefully you can now take these ideas and apply them to your own marketing efforts. Keep the advice from this article in mind and enjoy your new-found dollars.

TIP! ?Limited? is a strong keyword to include. When people shop online, it is because they are sisck of the brick and mortar stores.

Gene Robinson: First Gay Anglican Bishop Reflects On Tenure In New Hampshire

CONCORD, N.H. -- New Hampshire Episcopal Bishop Gene Robinson says he chafed for several years at being branded the first openly gay bishop of the Anglican Church until he realized that he was wasting a pulpit from which he could advocate for equality.

"I'd been given this really remarkable opportunity and it would be selfish of me not to be the best steward of that opportunity," he recently told The Associated Press in an interview as he prepares to retire in January. "We went from my consecration, which set off this international controversy, to nine years later seeing gay, lesbian and transgender congregants welcome at all levels of the church, including bishop."

Robinson's election in 2003 as the first openly gay bishop in the Anglican church created an international uproar and led conservative Episcopalians to break away from the main church in the United States.

Robinson, 65, will hand the pastoral staff to his successor, A. Robert Hirschfeld, in a ceremony at St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Concord on Jan. 5.

As he prepared to retire after nearly a decade as bishop, Robinson reflected on the crucibles and crusades of his tenure.

He was publicly shunned by church elders, targeted with death threats and says he struggled to strike a balance between being the "good bishop" and the "gay bishop." In the end, he says, they became one and the same.

He is a self-described "off-the-end-of-the-scale extrovert" who bounds across stages and television studios, whether promoting causes or his new book, "God Believes in Love: Straight Talk About Gay Marriage."

Robinson said it pained him deeply to be excluded in 2008 from a gathering of Anglican bishops and clergy that occurs every 10 years in England, known as the Lambeth Conference. He said it was the first time since 1867 that a bishop had not been invited.

He traveled to England despite the snub to make his presence known and minister to anyone who wanted his counsel.

"It was probably the hardest thing I've done ? to go and bear up under that quite intentional exclusion," Robinson said. "It took me a long time to get over it."

A month before the conference, he entered into a civil union with his long-time partner Mark Andrew. Robinson chuckles that columnists in religious publications speculated he did it to thumb his nose at the conference.

Robinson said it was a coincidence, one he and Andrew didn't realize until after the date was set, and said the timing of the ceremony was driven by far more somber reasons.

"The point was to put in place the protections a civil union would provide if someone made good on these death threats ... before I put myself in harm's way," Robinson said. "I wanted Mark to be as protected as he could be."

Their civil union automatically converted to a marriage when New Hampshire legalized gay marriage in 2010.

Months after the Lambeth Conference, Robinson delivered the invocation at the Lincoln Memorial that kicked off festivities leading up to the inauguration of President Barack Obama.

"That was an enormous honor," Robinson said.

Robinson said he has learned to live with the threats he's received and refuses to turn their rural home into a fortress.

For him, New Hampshire, where he has worked in the Episcopal Diocese for 27 years, has been a safe haven.

"New Hampshire was the one place where I wasn't the gay bishop," he said. "I'm just the bishop. That's been terrific and kind of lifesaving in way."

He has spent every Christmas Eve of the past decade ministering at New Hampshire's women's prison. He calls it his Christmas present to himself.

"I do church work 24-7, but I never feel more like I'm doing God's work than when I'm there," said Robinson, who is giving donations he got for his retirement from the congregation to the chaplain's program at the prison.

Robinson said he would have stayed on as bishop until the mandatory retirement age of 72 had he remained the sole gay voice in the nearly 300-member House of Bishops worldwide. Mary Glasspool, the first openly gay woman to serve as bishop, was elected to lead the diocese of Los Angeles in 2009.

"I never thought about retirement until she was elected," Robinson said. "Now I can move on to do other things."

Robinson will be a part-time senior fellow at the Center for American Progress, a liberal think tank founded by John Podesta, former chief of staff for President Bill Clinton. Robinson intends to spend two weeks a month in Washington and focus on immigration and health care reform, poverty and LGBT issues.

After a brief vacation in Palm Springs, Calif., he said he and Andrew will head for Washington to attend Obama's second inauguration as the guest of Rep.-elect Annie Kuster.

"I leave this job loving it more than when I started," Robinson said. "I think the excitement about the future is finally outweighing the grief over the loss."

Clippers beat Jazz 116-114 for 16th straight win

(AP) ? The Los Angeles Clippers already have a December to remember.

Sunday they can close it out in perfect fashion against a familiar foe ? the same Utah team they rallied to beat 116-114 Friday night to earn their 16th straight win.

If they extend their streak by beating the Jazz at home Sunday, they will join the 1995-96 Spurs and 1971-72 Lakers as the only teams in NBA history to complete a 16-0 month.

If they fight the way they did Friday, it should be easy.

"Give Utah credit, but our guys battled back tonight," Clippers coach Vinny Del Negro said. "They found a way to win and that's what it's all about. We stayed together, we weathered the storm when we had to and gave ourselves a chance and we were fortunate to make enough plays."

Afterward, team leader Chris Paul could hardly be heard over the pulsating music of Jay-Z as his teammates sang along in the visitors' locker room.

Why not?

The Clippers had just pulled off a 19-point comeback in what had been a dreadful venue for them.

Paul did most of the damage, leading the Clippers (24-6) with 29 points, including the final seven, as Los Angeles pulled out the two-point victory.

The Clippers winning streak is the longest in the NBA since Boston won 19 in row from Nov. 15 to Dec. 23, 2008.

The last time the franchise won three straight in Salt Lake City was 1979-1981 when they were the San Diego Clippers.

"This one is a great win for us because we kind of needed a challenge," said Blake Griffin, who had 22 points and 13 rebounds for the Clippers. "(We had) to prove not only to everybody else but to ourselves that we can still win close games like this and win a game down 19 in the third quarter."

In the opposing locker room, the Jazz were lamenting another one that got away ? the second loss at home to the Clippers during their record streak. They dropped the first by one on Dec. 3 after leading by 14.

On Friday, ex-Clipper Randy Foye put up a 3-pointer at the buzzer that was contested by Matt Barnes, but no foul was called. Foye finished with a season-high 28 points for Utah.

Foye did his best not to say anything about the officiating.

"I felt as though I pump-faked," Foye said. "He knew that I wanted to shoot the 3 and I felt the contact. He made me go straight up and shoot the ball straight down. It was just a tough play."

Paul was tough down the stretch, with the clinching free throws after getting fouled by Al Jefferson with 3.4 seconds left.

"When (DeAndre Jordan) came to give me the ball screen, I wasn't worried about (Gordon) Hayward, I was just worried about Al Jefferson," Paul said. "I could tell (Jefferson) was going to try and blitz me. Anytime two guys try and trap me, I'm always going to attack the slower guy. If they wouldn't have called the foul, I was right around Al anyway."

He sank both free throws this time, after missing one with 18 seconds left that allowed Jefferson to grab the rebound, draw the foul and sink two free throws at the other end to tie it at 114.

Paul made sure he got both the next time.

"Man, I couldn't wait to get to the line. I couldn't wait to get to the line," Paul said. "I was mad at myself for missing that last one. I couldn't wait to get to the line to redeem myself."

Just like the first game this season against the Jazz, Utah had the upper hand early.

The Jazz used a 36-point second quarter to turn a seven-point deficit into a 58-48 halftime lead.

Their reserves did most of the damage. Alec Burks and Earl Watson pushed the pace, big men Enes Kanter and Derrick Favors showed their presence inside and Hayward found ways to score.

Kanter's block of Ronny Turiaf ignited the crowd.

Hayward's 3-pointer tied it at 34 with 7:04 left in the second and he scored 10 straight for the Jazz, who forced eight turnovers in the quarter and held the Clippers to 37.5 percent shooting.

Foye, who kept Utah close in the first with a 13-point quarter on 4-of-5 shooting, gave the Jazz their biggest lead of the half, 54-41, with two more free throws.

The Jazz led 74-55 with 8:08 left in the third on a pair of free throws by Paul Millsap. But the Clippers outscored Utah 29-14 the rest of the quarter to go ahead 88-84 going into the fourth.

Paul provided the offense in the third with 13 points on 4-of-6 shooting.

"At the beginning of the third quarter, they made another run at us but then we got a little bit of a rhythm and then started guarding. We started getting some stops and getting out in the open court," Del Negro said.

The loss dropped Utah below .500 at 15-16. The Jazz have now lost six of their last eight.

Al Jefferson added 22 points for Utah. Hayward had 17 off the bench for Utah.

DeAndre Jordan had 16 points and 10 rebounds for the Clippers, who had six players in double figures.

"It's all tough," Jazz coach Tyrone Corbin said. "On our home court. We had a lead, we gave up the lead but we continued to fight. We made some mistakes but fought our way through it and had a chance to win the ball game at the end. Unfortunately they got a lot of free throws."

NOTES: An unidentified Jazz employee was disciplined and had his access to the team Twitter account discontinued after what team officials deemed an inappropriate tweet regarding the firing of Nets coach Avery Johnson and Brooklyn's interest in Phil Jackson. The tweet said Jackson only wants "great players," an apparent reference to ex-Jazz point guard Deron Williams, who had criticized Johnson's offense. ... Jazz point guard Mo Williams still has swelling in his sprained right thumb and remains out indefinitely. ... The Clippers got a scare late in the first quarter when Lamar Odom came up limping. He returned in the second and finished with 12 points. ... The Clippers failed to register a blocked shot despite coming into the game averaging 6.52.

Syria envoy Brahimi due for talks in Moscow on December 29

MOSCOW (Reuters) - International Syria envoy Lakhdar Brahimi will fly to Moscow on Saturday for talks with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov on how to end Syria's 21-month-old conflict, a Russian foreign ministry spokesman said.

Syrian diplomats earlier on Thursday entered the Russian Foreign Ministry in Moscow to discuss proposals for a peaceful resolution to the crisis following a diplomatic push by Brahimi in Damascus this week.

Plans made by Brahimi to broker a peaceful transfer of power in Syria will top the agenda when Lavrov and Brahimi meet on later this week, the foreign ministry spokesman said.

"We plan to discuss a range of issues linked to a political and diplomatic settlement in Syria, including Brahimi's efforts aimed at ending the violence and the launch of a comprehensive national dialogue," Alexander Lukashevich said.

On Thursday, Syrian Deputy Foreign Minister Faisal Makdad and another aide will meet Lavrov and Mikhail Bogdanov, the Kremlin's envoy for Middle East affairs, a Russian foreign ministry source said, without detailing the nature of the talks.

How to Approach Video Advertising | Business 2 Community

Once you have started making some videos you are proud of, you want to make sure you get your content out to your target audience as proficiently as possible. Apart from ensuring you have made the most of the many free video marketing opportunities out there, it?s worth considering paid video advertising to aid the distribution of your videos.

We find that many clients of ours are now starting to plan the distribution of their videos at the same time they are looking into the video production. This is sensible as if you do not have a plan for who you want to see your video and how you will get it in front of them then what?s the point in making it in the first place?

There are an increasing number of ways to advertise or refer users to your online video content. Let?s take a look at some of them:

Video Ad Networks and Real Time Bidding Platforms

You could consider buying advertising from a video ad network such as ScanScout, Advertising.com, Digital Broadcasting Group, Tremor Media or BrightRoll. Reelseo give a run down of these and other networks here.

Real Time Bidding Platforms allow ad networks to bid for the real time opportunity of getting their ad in front of a viewer based on the a number of variables in terms of the viewer?s location, interests etc.

Here is a good in depth explanation of the process.

Using an ad network can be very expensive, but if budget is no obstacle, then it is certainly worth considering.

advertiser and publisher

Direct Publisher/Portal Video Advertising

YouTube TrueView Video Ads
?Engage Your Viewers by giving them Choice?

With YouTube?s impressive statistics as the number one video hosting site in terms of traffic, it is probably a good place to start. Being owned by Google, the biggest search engine, it can only help to have your video on the site.
There are four TrueView video ad formats: InStream and InSlate as well as InDisplay and InSearch. InStream is the one where, having found the YouTube video you want to see, you have to watch 5 seconds of an ad before being able to skip it, or carry on to the end. For the advertiser, you pay only if the viewer decides to watch at least 30 seconds of the ad (or all of it if less than 30 seconds). InSlate gives the viewer the option of selecting one of a number of ads to watch in order to continue watching whatever they searched YouTube for originally, and the advertiser pays when their ad is selected.

With both ad formats you can pay for your ad to be shown when specific keywords are searched. With the number of people trawling the site, there are bound to be some relevant for your web video content, so if it is mass exposure you are looking for, YouTube is probably for you. A real numbers game which can certainly reap rewards, if you aren?t put off by the distraction of all the other ads and random videos potentially putting your target customer off, not to mention the possibility of your ad appearing next to a competitor?s, or in the middle of their video, or vice versa, which could confuse your brand messaging.

Twitter for small business

Twitter offers advertisers what they term ?promoted products?, which are either so-called promoted accounts, or promoted tweets. You need to set up a twitter account first and start tweeting for a while to build up a network of followers. Hopefully you?ll be doing this already as part of your social media marketing plan. Twitter then looks at the type of followers you have already attracted and promotes you to a similar cross section that don?t yet follow you. If you choose to have a ?Promoted Account? this means that Twitter will put you in the ?Who to follow? area of your potential followers? feed. If you choose to have a ?Promoted Tweet?, Twitter monitors your output and promotes your best tweets to the relevant potential followers. Essentially it is about giving a boost to your best tweets, in which you can post the link to your video. You only pay when someone follows your account or engages with your promoted tweet. You decide on your daily budget and whether you want to target a specific geographical area too, which is helpful.

This has not yet been rolled out to all businesses and is still on a limited beta test. Keep an eye on the above URL for details of the complete roll out.

web video distribution

Content Discovery Sites

Outbrain

Outbain describe themselves as ?The Leading Content Discovery Platform on the Web?
Outbrain refers people to your content by giving them recommendations based on whatever a person is already looking at. They work across news and entertainment sites only, so you need to make sure they are right for your business. You only pay per view, and recommendations to your video are posted at the times most appropriate to capture your relevant target audience. The video will need to be posted on a blog as Outbrain aggregates your RSS feed into their system and places your content on publisher sites.

Virool

?A simple tool that gets your video seen by the people you want?
This service distributes your video to relevant publishers (websites, blogs, social games, mobile applications). You set a maximum amount you wish to pay per view and then decide on demographics, location, keywords etc.
Interestingly, Virool mentions the rather poignant fact that people spend more time on video sharing sites watching viral videos than on Facebook, Twitter and CNN.

StumbleUpon
This short video explains Stumble Upon?s paid discovery service which can be effective for promoting video content.

By using their ?Paid Discovery? service, you can bypass even having to wait for users to click though to your site via an ad or recommendation, instead they are delivered direct to your landing page of choice. The site works by getting to know the interests of its membership, both though which categories they tick to select, and by what they actually look at. As an advertiser, you can select which categories are relevant for your target audience and your video is placed among a selection of the best in the category. Only when your video is viewed are you charged, and you can cap the daily budget so there are no nasty surprises at the end of the campaign.

Reddit advertising

Reddit ? ?The Front Page of the Internet?
If you can cope with the horrible looking site, you can pay to have your video link featured in their sponsored link section. They call it ?self-serve advertising? and it is fairly straight forward, though a little hit and miss in terms of how much exposure your budget will buy. You decide how much you want to spend per day, and how many days you want your ad to run. Choose whether you want it to run site-wide or in a specific reddit section, then submit the url and title of your video. The amount of traffic you get each day depends on how many other sponsors are advertising, and how much they are paying. Whatever your spend represents as a fraction of the total spend that day will be the proportion of the traffic you are exposed to. Hope that makes sense.

video content discovery

Video Distribution Services

Oneload

This is another distribution service, which has some pretty impressive testimonials. According to MacWorld, ?There is no better way to mass-distribute your video masterpiece?. The company is owned by TubeMogul, a video ad media buying platform, which gives it a great understanding of and power in the media buying industry. In one fell swoop you can put your video out across social networking sites, video sharing sites and other specialised sites. I personally like the fact that there are no surprises when it comes to cost, with an up front rate to pay. You can try their basic business tier service for either $75 a month (1 year contract), or $150 for a month without committing to a contract. There are also 2 other business tiers (Business Pro and Enterprise) which offer more features.

This form of video advertising relies on you have active communities on video platforms already as otherwise nobody will see your videos once they make it onto the platforms. This is more a tool to use in conjunction with some of the aforementioned advertising opportunities.

There are many more paid options for promoting your video, but you have to start somewhere. So which should you choose? Well, it depends on your budget and target audience. There?s no harm in trying all of them and comparing results if you have the budget to spare. Why not ask some of your current customers (and ideally target customers) where they watch online video and let this inform your decision. You may also find it is worth looking into services and products your target audience appreciates and looking as some kind of sponsorship situation where your video is embedded in their brand websites.

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The Obama administration formally proposed a controversial sale of advanced spy drones to help South Korea bear more of its defense from any attack by the heavily armed North.

Seoul has requested a possible $1.2 billion sale of four Northrop Grumman Corp RQ-4 "Global Hawk" remotely piloted aircraft with enhanced surveillance capabilities, the Pentagon's Defense Security Cooperation Agency said in a statement dated on Monday and distributed on Tuesday.

South Korea needs such systems to assume top responsibility for intelligence-gathering from the U.S.-led Combined Forces Command as scheduled in 2015, the security agency said in releasing a notice to U.S. lawmakers.

"The proposed sale of the RQ-4 will maintain adequate intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance capabilities and will ensure the alliance is able to monitor and deter regional threats in 2015 and beyond," the notice said.

The United States has agreed with Seoul to turn over the wartime command of Korean troops later this decade. Current arrangements grew from the U.S. role in the 1950-1953 Korean War that repelled a North Korean takeover of the South.

Seoul has shown interest in the high-altitude, long-endurance Global Hawk platform for at least four years. The system, akin to Lockheed Martin Corp's U-2 spy plane, may be optimized to scan large areas for stationary and moving targets by day or night and despite cloud cover.

It transmits imagery and other data from 60,000 feet at near real-time speed, using electro-optical, infrared and radar-imaging sensors built by Raytheon Co.

The possible sale has been held up by discussions involving price, aircraft configuration and a go-slow on release of such technology subject to a voluntary 34-nation arms control pact.

The Defense Department began informally consulting Congress on the possible Global Hawk sale in the summer of 2011, only to withdraw it pending further work on the make-up of the proposed export to Seoul amid lawmakers' arms-control concerns.

The formal notification to Congress came less than two weeks after a North Korean space launch of a satellite atop a multi-stage rocket, a first for the reclusive state, widely seen as advancing its ballistic missile program.

A White House statement denounced the December 12 launch as a "highly provocative act" that would bear consequences for violations of United Nations resolutions. The North is banned from testing missile or nuclear technology under international sanctions imposed after its 2006 and 2009 nuclear weapons tests.

In October 2008, then-U.S. Defense Secretary Robert Gates told reporters that the United States was "very sympathetic" to South Korea's interest in Global Hawk. But he cited issues that had to be overcome because of the so-called Missile Technology Control Regime, or MTCR.

The pact, established in 1987, has been credited with slowing the spread of ballistic missiles and other unmanned delivery systems that potentially could be used for chemical, biological and nuclear attacks.

Pact members, including the United States, agree to curb their exports of systems capable of carrying a 500-kilogram (1,102-pound) payload at least 300 kilometers (186 miles). The Global Hawk falls under a strong presumption against export under MTCR guidelines.

The notification to Congress did not mention that a U.S. government waiver for such an export would be required.

Arms-control advocates fear that this could fuel instability and stir regional arms-race dynamics as well as provide diplomatic cover for an expansion of such exports by Russia, China and others.

The Obama administration agreed earlier this year to let South Korea, a treaty ally, stretch the range of its ballistic missile systems to cover all of North Korea, going beyond the voluntary pact's 300 km (186 miles).

The congressional notification is required by U.S. law and does not mean that a deal has been concluded.

If a sale takes place, it would be for the third generation of Global Hawk drones known as Block 30, the security agency's notice to Congress said.

The Pentagon, in its fiscal 2013 budget request, proposed mothballing its own Block 30 Global Hawks and ending plans to buy more of that generation. Doing so would have no effect on the administration's plans to acquire other versions of the long-range drone.

South Korea's possible Global Hawk purchase would mark the system's first sale in the Asia-Pacific region. It has already been sold to the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO).

Australia, Japan and Singapore each have shown interest in buying Global Hawk systems, Northrop Grumman officials have said. Company representatives had no comment on the Christmas holiday on the proposed sale to Seoul.

Notes For December 25th, 2012 - Internet Writing Workshop

We at the Internet Writing Workshop would like to wish all of our members and blog readers a safe and happy holiday season. For your holiday reading, I recommend A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens, A Child's Christmas in Wales by Dylan Thomas, and Old Christmas by Washington Irving.

This Day In Writing History

On December 25th, 1924, the legendary American playwright and screenwriter Rod Serling was born in Syracuse, New York. He grew up in Binghamton, where his elementary school teachers dismissed him as an incorrigible class clown.

As a young boy, Rod would act out scenes from stories he'd read in pulp magazines and from movies he'd seen. When he entered junior high school, his English teacher discovered his talent and encouraged him to get involved in the school's extracurricular activities involving public speaking.

In high school, Rod wrote for the school newspaper. He was known for his scathing articles wherein he voiced his strong liberal convictions. He would become editor of the newspaper, a star tennis player, and class valedictorian.

After graduating high school in 1943, Rod joined the Army, where he served as a paratrooper in the 11th Airborne Division and saw action in the Philippines. During his training, like other men in his unit, he took up boxing. He became a solid flyweight fighter.

Rod would be transferred to his division's demolition unit, which was nicknamed "The Death Squad" because of its high casualty rate. He saw death every day, from the horrors of combat to freak accidents, such as a soldier being decapitated by a food crate that dropped on his head.

During his Army service, Rod Serling would win the Purple Heart, the Bronze Medal, and the Philippine Liberation Medal. He war experiences would affect him deeply, both as a human being and as a writer.

He would later say of his military experience, "I was bitter about everything and at loose ends when I got out of the service. I think I turned to writing to get it off my chest."

After the war ended and he had recovered from his injuries, Rod went to college on the G.I. Bill, where he earned a degree in literature. While in college, he wrote, directed, and acted in radio programs for the college radio station, setting the stage for his career.

In the summer of 1946, after graduating from college, Rod began his career in radio as both an actor and writer. His true passion was writing. He wrote scripts for radio programs and served as a continuity writer.

By 1950, Rod realized that radio was dying as a dramatic medium, so he switched to a fledgling new medium that had lots of potential - television. He got his start in television writing ad copy for the sponsors.

In the early 1950s, most television shows were performed live. Some of the most popular programs were "live theater" shows which featured performances of plays. These shows mixed classic plays with new productions written exclusively for television.

Rod Serling would become one of the finest playwrights of the time, writing original Broadway-quality plays for television. His best known plays were Patterns and Requiem For a Heavyweight.

Patterns is a searing look at the brutal world of big business in the 1950s. Ruthless corporate boss Walter Ramsey wants to put aging executive Andy Sloane out to pasture. He has been grooming up and coming young vice president Fred Staples to take Sloane's place in the company.

Ramsey humiliates Sloane at every turn, hoping to pressure him into resigning rather than risk tarnishing the company's reputation by firing him outright. Sloane's future replacement, the young Staples, feels guilty and believes that Sloane is still valuable to the company.

Patterns won Rod Serling an Emmy Award - his first of six Emmys for dramatic writing - and was so popular that it became the first live TV show to receive a repeat performance. The second performance was recorded on kinescope and is available on DVD.

Requiem For a Heavyweight written for the famous Playhouse 90 TV series, told the story of Harlan "Mountain" McClintock, a washed up, punch drunk boxer who is in no shape to fight, but is persuaded to fight again by his sleazy manager, Maish.

Deep in debt, Maish has arranged for McClintock to take a fall in a rigged match. During the bout, the boxer's pride kicks in, and he refuses to go down. Maish loses his money and is now indebted to the mob.

McClintock, still loyal to Maish, agrees to take up professional wrestling to earn the money. Maish dresses him up in a humiliating hillbilly costume. McClintock finds out that Maish is betting against him again and refuses to wrestle. He walks out on Maish, who finds a young boxer he can exploit.

During his tenure as a playwright for TV, Serling often found himself at odds with the shows' sponsors, who at that time produced TV shows and controlled the content. Sometimes he was asked to make inconsequential cuts to scripts, other times he had to do major rewrites because the sponsor didn't like the theme of the story.

The last straw came when he wrote an episode of the United States Steel Hour in 1954 that was based on the famous murder of Emmett Till, a 14-year-old black boy from Missouri who was murdered by white racists for flirting with a white woman.

The United States Steel company forced Rod to change the story completely. The murder victim became a Jewish pawnbroker in an unnamed town. By 1959, Rod Serling had earned enough clout to produce his own television series. He retained as much creative control as possible.

The Twilight Zone, which aired from 1959-1964, was more than just an anthology series featuring tales of science fiction, fantasy, and horror. By using fantastic settings and scenarios, Rod was able to write morality plays without his morals being questioned by sponsors.

Serling himself appeared in every episode to introduce the story at the beginning and sum up the moral of the story at the end. He also provided the classic opening narration scored to eerie music:

You're traveling through another dimension, a dimension not only of sight and sound but of mind; a journey into a wondrous land whose boundaries are that of imagination. That's the signpost up ahead ? your next stop, the Twilight Zone.

Rod Serling personally wrote 92 of the series' 156 episodes. Among the other writers who penned episodes of The Twilight Zone were Richard Matheson, Charles Beaumont, Earl Hamner Jr., and Reginald Rose. The cast of guest stars appearing on the show was a who's who list of great actors and actresses.

During its original TV run, The Twilight Zone had a strong following of fans, but only performed moderately in the ratings. During its syndication runs in the 1970s and 80s, it became a staple of late night television, attracting new generations of fans and becoming a cultural phenomenon.

The series would be revived several times with new episodes, including remakes of the Rod Serling originals, but nothing can equal or eclipse the brilliance of the original Twilight Zone, which is now available in its entirety on DVD and Blu-Ray.

After The Twilight Zone ended, Serling created and wrote a Western series called The Loner, which only lasted for one season, from 1965-1966, due to poor reviews and low ratings.

In 1970, Rod Serling returned to TV with a new series called Night Gallery. A horror anthology series, each episode would open with Serling in a sinister art gallery, unveiling a painting related to the story. The pilot movie was co-directed by a young Steven Spielberg.

Serling wrote over a third of the series' scripts. Despite the solid writing and performances, Night Gallery only ran for three years. The ratings were never good and Serling had tired of the constant battles over his scripts, this time with network executives instead of commercial sponsors.

In between his work on his TV series, Rod Serling taught writing, drama, and film classes at various universities. After Night Gallery ended, he taught at Ithaca College until he died of a heart attack in 1975 at the age of 50.

Quote Of The Day

"It is difficult to produce a television documentary that is both incisive and probing when every twelve minutes one is interrupted by twelve dancing rabbits singing about toilet paper." - Rod Serling

Top hockey stars set for big pay day in India

Indian hockey captain Sardar Singh

A FINANCIAL windfall awaits the world?s leading field hockey stars when they play in a new Indian tournament next month on the lines of cricket?s popular Indian Premier League.

?

The Hockey India League (HIL), sanctioned by the sport?s world governing body, will have the top stars turn out for five franchised-based teams from January 17-February 17, organisers said on Sunday (December 16).

?

Indian captain Sardar Singh was picked up by the Delhi Wave Riders franchise for an annual salary of $78,000 (?48178.33) at an auction that began in New Delhi on Sunday and was expected to continue late into the night.

?

Moritz Fuerste, named the International Hockey Federation?s (FIH) player of the year for 2012 after helping Germany win two successive Olympic gold medals in Beijing and London, went to Ranchi Rhinos for $75,000 (?46329.93).

?

Dutch veteran Teun de Nooijer, 36, was sold to the Uttar Pradesh Wizards for $66,000 (?40771.02), while Punjab Warriors bought influential Australian striker Jamie Dwyer for $60,000 (?37064.57).

?

Among other early gainers were Indian penalty corner specialist VR Raghunath ($76,000/?49946.58), Dutch goalkeeper Jaap Stockmann ($68,000/?) and Australian midfielder Eddie Ockenden ($65,000/?40149.70).

?

Mumbai Magicians was the fifth franchise in the fray.

?

The money paled in comparison to what cricketers make in the five-year-old IPL - where top players earn around $2m (?1.23m) a year - but was still a financial bonanza for the hockey stars.

?

Each of the five squads will have 10 foreign and 14 Indian players for the televised tournament described by HIL boss Narinder Batra as a ?game changer? in the world of hockey.

?

?The tournament not only provides players a great platform to showcase their skills, but also helps them gain financial rewards and raises the profile of hockey in India and across the world,? said Batra.

?

Among the renowned coaches signed up by the franchises, owned by Indian business houses, were Ric Charlesworth and Barry Dancer of Australia, and Roelant Oltmans of the Netherlands.

?

Hockey, often regarded as India?s national sport despite the country?s obsession with cricket, has been relegated to the background in recent years due to the team?s poor showing in major events.

?

India, who won the last of their eight Olympic gold medals at the Western-boycotted Moscow Games in 1980, failed to qualify for the Beijing Games in 2008 and finished last in London.

?

The HIL follows the launch last year of the unsanctioned World Series Hockey, another big-money event organised by the rebel Indian Hockey Federation that opposes Hockey India.

Bumpy final stretch in U.S. watchdog swaps overhaul

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - On Monday, October 15, top U.S. derivatives regulator Gary Gensler watched a mock ceremony to mark the start of a broad overhaul of the swaps industry that started that day.

In a conference room at the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC), two senior staff members cut a white ribbon hanging over a copy of the 2010 Dodd-Frank act.

Yet the preceding Friday, the agency had slipped through a batch of letters to grant exceptions to the rules it was now celebrating.

The last-minute changes, critics say, were a telling sign of the overly aggressive way in which Gensler - himself a former Goldman Sachs banker - is tackling the post-crisis clean-up of Wall Street.

The agency's staff has sent out more than 50 letters granting temporary reprieve from the rules after industry complaints this year.

So far the CFTC has completed two-thirds of the rules Congress told it to write to revamp a swaps markets blamed for exacerbating the 2008 financial crisis. The clampdown may make the business far less lucrative for the large investment banks that dominate it.

What remains to be done - rules that govern swap trading platforms, safety buffers for uncleared swaps, and guidance on how the agency's rules apply abroad - are the final building blocks that need to be put in place in coming months.

A failure to complete the process in a smooth and timely fashion could drive away investors already worried the watchdog's clampdown will make swaps more expensive to use.

"By any measure, (the CFTC) has really done a terrific job, under incredibly adverse circumstances," said Dennis Kelleher, who heads Better Markets, a Washington-based group advocating tougher rules for the financial industry.

A groundswell of discontent about the CFTC's handling of the rules was only to be expected, he said, as the $650 trillion derivatives industry - largely in use by financial speculators - is being regulated for the first time.

"(In) every part of the process ... we've seen Wall Street use its unlimited resources to either kill, cut or loophole first the law, and then the regulations," Kelleher said.

At around $200 million, and only slowly rising over the past years, the CFTC's budget has not kept up with the its vastly expanded powers over the swaps market, eight times the size of the futures market it already oversaw.

The U.S. financial industry equally spent hundreds of millions of dollars on lobbying Washington to put more business-friendly measures in place in each of the past two years, according to research group Open Secrets.

UNFINISHED BUSINESS

The stakes for the industry are high. Wholesale derivative brokers such as ICAP, Tullett Prebon, GFI - which arrange deals between banks - are in the dark about what business will look like.

They plan to set up swaps trading platforms - called Swap Execution Facilities, or SEFs - a key prong in the Dodd-Frank law to end the practice of bilaterally agreed deals between brokers for their clients over the phone.

"We would prefer to see the (rules) finalised and move forward," MarketAxess Chief Executive Rick McVey told Reuters. "All of us have now been investing lots of money for two years to be a SEF and we still don't have certainty."

The rough outlines of the rules are clear, but details such as how much dealing can still take place over the phone, and below which threshold swaps need to delist are crucial in determining how profitable the business will be.

Investment banks such as JPMorgan, Bank of America, Citi and Goldman Sachs are keenly awaiting another decision, which will determine how profitable swaps trading is for these big derivative houses.

Together with a host of bank regulators, the CFTC is determining how much safety margin swap traders will need to put up to protect against counterparty default, something that is likely to raise the cost for such deals.

Banks are worried that investors will start using contracts such as futures if swaps trading becomes too expensive. Futures can be used much in the same way as swaps, but the banks say they are less sophisticated.

CHALLENGED IN COURT

An even thornier issue is how the CFTC's rules apply to banks abroad. In July, the CFTC issued an order that drew anger from European and Asian regulators, who blamed the regulator for encroaching on their territory.

Two commissioners said last week they hoped to finalise the order this year, possibly easing the rules for foreign dealers. With only a few days left before the Christmas holiday, it's another big outstanding task.

And even if the CFTC succeeds in putting out the order, it is unlikely to include the issue of how it relies on foreign regulators, which could determine how much business foreign banks can do with U.S. rivals.

The CFTC is also fighting industry challenges in court. Last week, it booked a legal victory against the mutual funds industry when a judge ruled in favour of a rule two trade groups had sought to overturn.

It is still appealing a September court ruling that threw out a rule to curb speculation in commodity markets by capping trading positions to a maximum limit. At the same time, it is drawing up a new rule, should the appeal fail.

With those bits of the business unfinished, lawyers will remain busy telling clients which rules to comply with for several more months. But even they admit that the CFTC's job was a formidable one from the beginning.

"I understand that regulators make the point it's very difficult," said Anna Pinedo, a partner at law firm Morrison Foerster in New York. "You've got a market that is huge, that's international and that grew up without regulation."

Bitcasa is another cloud storage option for your Microsoft Surface

Bitcasa for Windows 8

SkyDrive, Dropbox, Google Drive, iCloud. Does the world really need another file hosting service up in the cloud? I say why not, as more competition can only benefit all of us. Bitcasa (www.bitcasa.com) is a relatively new kid on the block and they?ve just launched a Windows 8 app. What makes Bitcasa unique is their ?infinite hard drive?. Interested? Read on.

At first glance, Bitcasa might be like all the others, free storage to start and then you end up paying for space when you need to move up a tier or two. With Bitcasa you get 10 GB free and then after that it?s $10 per month for unlimited storage. To put that in perspective, with SkyDrive you get an extra 100 GB per year if you pay $50. There is also no limit to the number of files you upload or their size. Everything you upload is encrypted from the start and backed up on their servers at least three times.

According to them, with the Windows 8/RT app you can:

  • View your photos and photo albums
  • Watch videos
  • Listen to music albums
  • View documents
  • Share a link to a file
  • Download from Bitcasa to your local drive
  • Upload a file to a Bitcasa folder

It?s interesting to say they recommended using the desktop application for Windows or Mac to initially get all your content up in the cloud.

This could be another viable option for Surface owners who max out their storage on the device. I?ll admit to being very comfortable with SkyDrive and don?t see myself really filling up the 125 GBs I have anytime soon, but I would be lying if I didn?t say that Bitcasa is an interesting and intriguing option right now. Check out the app in the Windows 8 Store if you're into unlimited storage.

We?ve reached out to see if there are any plans to support Windows Phone and will update when we hear back.

Anyone going to give this a try?

Ozone levels have sizeable impact on worker productivity

Dec. 18, 2012 ? Researchers in the Department of Health Policy and Management at Columbia's Mailman School of Public Health assessed the impact of pollution on agricultural worker productivity using daily variations in ozone levels. Their results show that ozone, even at levels below current air-quality standards in most parts of the world, has significant negative impacts on worker productivity. Their findings suggest that environmental protection is important for promoting economic growth and investing in human capital in contrast to its common portrayal as a tax on producers.

Results of the study are published in the American Economic Review.

Ozone pollution continues to be a pervasive global issue with much debate over optimal levels. While policy makers routinely note that regulating ozone smog leads to many health benefits like reduced hospitalizations and mortality rates, Matthew Neidell, PhD, associate professor at the Mailman School and principal investigator, set out to investigate whether lower air pollution might also affect job performance. Until this research, there had been no systematic evidence on the direct impact of pollution on worker productivity.

The researchers found that a 10 ppb (parts per billion) change in average ozone exposure results in a significant 5.5 percent change in agricultural worker productivity. "These estimates are particularly noteworthy as the U.S. EPA is currently moving in the direction of reducing federal ground-level ozone standards," said Dr.Neidell, PhD. This past September President Obama said he would not support a proposal by the Environmental Protection Agency to tighten the federal ozone standard because it would pose too heavy a burden on businesses, which stunned public health experts and environmentalists.

Dr. Neidell also points out that in developing countries where environmental regulations are less strict and agriculture plays a more dominant role in the economy, the effects reported here may have a vast detrimental impact on a country's prosperity.

The Rev. Jim Solomon, seen speaking at an interfaith vigil for the Connecticut shooting victims Dec. 16, 2012, in Newton, Conn., said the little girl 'has wisdom beyond her years.'

The little girl, who is 6? years old but hasn't otherwise been identified, "ran out of the school building covered in blood from head to toe, and the first words she said to her mom when she got outside was, 'Mommy, I'm OK, but all of my friends are dead,'" the Rev. Jim Solomon, pastor of New Hope Community Church in Newtown, Conn., told ABC News in a report that aired Sunday.

"Of those who were left in the classroom of first graders, she was the lone survivor," Solomon said. (Law enforcement officials and witnesses say seven pupils survived in a second classroom by hiding in a closet.)

"Somehow, in that moment, by God's grace she was able to act as if she was already deceased," said Solomon, who spoke at the community interfaith vigil Sunday night on the same program as President Barack Obama.

Solomon said the little girl couldn't have survived "outside of divine intervention."

"She has wisdom beyond her years," he said.

The girl's parents were understandably relieved and grateful, Solomon said, but her mother told him "she was suffering from what she called 'survivor's guilt,' because so many of their friends no longer have their children, but she has hers."

On the Eleventh Day of Christmas? Fitness Packages from TWO ...

Kristin-Park

I?ve never met Kristin in person, but her enthusiasm for Stroller Strides and fitness, and her passion for helping mothers comes through in every communication I?ve had with her.

Her Stroller Strides classes are about more than getting in shape. ?It?s really just a side effect,? she tells me. ?Part of my job is to get the moms in shape, but I also make sure they have time to focus on themselves.? Kristin considers another big part of her job to be keeping the kids the moms bring to class entertained. ?A lot of people say, ?Oh, my kid will never sit in his stroller during classes.? I promise you, they will.? She says during a typical class, ?We sing songs, blow bubbles. I get a little silly. I use puppets. We make sure they?re having a good time.?

Kristin also knows how tough the first steps can be. That?s why she offers a first class free, and she lets new members bring a friend. ?It?s hard to be the new girl,? she says. ?I want people to feel comfortable.?

Stroller Strides currently have exercise classes on Monday, Wednesday and Fridays at 8:30am. at the Salmon Run Mall, where they meet in front of Sears. Play groups are Friday after class. Those attending their first class should wear comfortable clothes and bring water to drink and a towel or yoga mat for floor exercises. Snack and stroller toys are good ideas for the kids too. Exercise bands are included with the membership, though you can borrow some at your first class. When the weather becomes warmer in the spring, classes move outside to Thompson Park. More information about classes and what to expect can be found on the Stroller Strides of Watertown website.?Those interested in trying a class are welcome to contact Kristin through Facebook, email or by phone. You can also register for a class on the website.

Kristin?s job as a Stroller Strides instructor is a perfect fit for her, and her classes are obviously a perfect fit for her list of growing clients. Why? Read below for more about Kristin and Stroller Strides of Watertown:

NNY Life: Where are you from, and what brings you to Watertown?

Kristin: I am originally from the Watertown area (and maybe one of the few who?ve moved away and came back.) After college I married and moved out of state. We?ve lived in several different areas of the US and after thirteen years, my husband?s job brought us back to NNY.

NNY Life: Tell me a little about yourself.

Kristin: In my professional career, I am a RN with a background in maternal child health and pediatric nursing, mostly in pediatric ICU at large urban hospitals. Personally, I?ve always been active and enjoyed traveling and outdoor activities.

I caught the fitness ?bug? several years ago after working with an inspiring personal trainer who was an avid weight lifter. She educated me about clean eating and encouraged me to make incredible changes in my body that I never knew were possible. From there I went on to study nutrition and women?s strength training on my own. It?s become a passion of mine.

NNY Life: Why did you choose Stroller Strides and how is it a good fit for your family?

Kristin: I chose to bring Stroller Strides to Watertown for so many reasons. When my son was born, we lived away from family in New England and my husband had a job that took him all over the country and overseas every week. I experienced first-hand what it is like to be a new Mom and not have family close by for support. Fortunately, at the time, I had access to several Mommy & Me style programs where I could bring my son and connect with other new Moms. Once I got the courage to get out of the house and go, meeting other new Moms made a world of difference.

When I moved back to NNY my daughter was born, I was frustrated that there weren?t the Mommy & Me activities that I was used to. I still really wanted and needed that Mommy camaraderie. With this, I was determined to start something on my own and I knew it would benefit our community too, but wasn?t sure what I would do.

I began to brainstorm. I already knew that I?d wanted to share my passion and knowledge of health and fitness with other women and had been considering branching into personal training for some time, although, I didn?t want to leave my newborn daughter any more than I already did working part time as a nurse. I was familiar with the Stroller Strides program from a close Mom friend in New England who loved it. I knew one of the pearls of Stroller Strides is that I could bring my daughter with me while I taught fitness classes to other Moms who also could bring their stroller-age children with them too. It seemed to be a perfect fit. From there the process of applications and interviews began and I purchased my franchise last summer.

NNY Life: What are some of the challenges you face as a business owner?

Kristin: As a mother of young children I think balance and time are always challenges no matter what you do in life. Starting a business has been much more time-consuming than I realized.

Getting the word out to my target audience has been a challenge as well. I started with what I knew and reached out to healthcare professionals in the area (Pediatricians and OB doctors). I received great feedback but most said they couldn?t endorse Stroller Strides because it?s not a non-profit organization. It?s been a challenge to get to the Ft Drum market because I am a civilian.

One of my biggest challenges has been taming the misconceptions about Stroller Strides. These are the ones I hear most often:

1. People think Stroller Strides is only for new post-partum Moms. Not true! We currently have children from 5mos up to 4.5 yrs old. As long as your children can ride in a stroller, they are welcome.

2. Several women have contacted me saying they are very interested in trying Stroller Strides but are worried because they are overweight or really out of shape. My response is not to worry because that?s what I?m here. Our group is made up of Moms of all ages, shapes, sizes and fitness levels. (We really are!)

3. Some think that we are strictly a stroller walking group. Stroller Strides classes incorporate cardio and strength training. I make sure every workout can be tailored to the clients of all fitness levels.

4. Finally, we are NOT only about exercise. We also have weekly playgroups and monthly mom?s time outs, too. Stroller Strides is about supporting women and motherhood. Motherhood can be isolating after the baby showers are over and Dad has returned to work. New Moms often feel they are the only ones who feel the way they do when in fact many of the experiences of having a newborn are somewhat universal. Regular activity has been shown to improve mild postpartum depression, too. Moms of older stroller-age children also benefit from Stroller Strides!

NNY Life: How do you promote your business?

Kristin: I?ve promoted Stroller Strides of Watertown using community flyers, brochures at a few pediatrician and obstetrician offices who have agreed to support the program. I also have a website, a Facebook page, and list the classes on Craigslist. I am constantly looking for more ways to reach our NNY Moms.

NNY Life: What are some of your business goals?

Kristin: One of the Stroller Strides mission statements is ?Stroller Strides helps Moms make strides in fitness, motherhood and life.? I truly believe in that. Even though it may sound clich?, I really want Stroller Strides of Watertown to be a resource to connect, support and empower women with young children like those programs did for me when I was a new Mom several years ago.

Meet Nova Schenk of The Pilates Room and the Watertown YMCA

You might recognize Nova Schenk?s name from yesterday?s Music Education Centers giveaway. When I started looking around for business owners to participate in the 12 Days of NNY Christmas giveaway, Nova was one of the first people I contacted. Not only did she offer far more than I ever expected ? a four session package of one-on-one Pilates instruction in conjunction with The Pilates Room in downtown Watertown (a $180 value), she also offered the music lessons package without being asked. That?s just an example of what a generous person she is. She doesn?t just give generously, she does so without hesitation, without wondering what she?ll get in return and with a big, genuine smile on her face.

She answered a few questions about her background and the career she?s building for herself out of a basic hope for the happiness of everyone she meets.

NNY Life: Where are you from, and what brings you to Watertown?

Nova: I am originally from the Albany area, but lived in the Rochester area for fifteen years before moving to Watertown. I am here in Watertown because my husband, Christian, just recently joined the US Army as a bandsperson.

NNY Life: Tell me a little about your education and background

Nova: I have a BS in Recreation Therapy and a Masters in Public Administration. In 2005 I decided to be a stay at home mom and finish my Masters degree. After having my second child in 2006, I decided to become an aquatic fitness instructor at my local YMCA and began teaching general aquafit and aqua pilates classes there. I continued teaching until I moved to Watertown in 2011, then began instructing aqua pilates and aqua yoga, as well as land classes in both. I? have just finished my Pilates Certification and am looking forward to working more intimately with my clients in a 1:1 or small group setting.

NNY Life: Why did you choose the business you?re in and how is it a good fit for you/your family?

Nova: I have always been into sports, but my interest transformed once I became pregnant and began taking aquatic exercise classes. Once that medium transformed to land exercise I was hooked ? I love being a part of people?s happiness and overall health. My work is a great partner to my husbands musical talents and schedule, as it is quite flexible. I feel I am setting a great example for my children and they typically become my first clients. My husband and I also run a music lesson studio (Music Education Centers), which allows me to work from home and develop my instructional skills.

NNY Life: What are some of the challenges you face as a business owner?

Nova: Balancing between being flexible to accomodate other?s needs and interests and setting firm boundaries for the sake of the business.

NNY Life: What are some of your business goals?

Nova: Happiness has always been the goal of any route I have taken in my life. Exercise has been a huge contributing factor to my ability to be a happy and successful wife and mother. I have always wanted to work for myself and be able to bring my dogs to work with me :) I ultimately want to create an all-encompassing space, called ?Feel Good Inc.?, where one can find yoga and pilates classes, musical instruction, small concerts, a small cafe and library, massage therapy, art shows and displays, and other local boutique type commerce. A place where anyone of any age can go to feel good, because after all that is what it?s all about.
